Deepthi Amarasekera’s debut art exhibition, ‘Seeing Life In Colour’, was held at Harold Peiris Gallery recently. ‘Seeing Life In Colour’ is a multi-layered and diverse display of her creative journey that commenced over a decade ago when she finally got the courage to embark on her childhood passion to paint and express herself in colour giving a voice and image to the emotions within. The creative side of her remained dormant and unrealised until now, since she dedicated her life to the study of science pursuing a degree in Microbiology and Virology at the University of Aberdeen and then went onto live and work in Scotland for many years before embracing the role of motherhood. Her abstractions reflect certain motifs and shapes infusing into her work from her scientific background quite unconsciously which illustrates the fact that our life experiences, whether it be in the form of formal education or otherwise, have an innate tendency to get ingrained in the recess of our subconscious mind and adds to the composite human being we get molded into. Deepthi uses art to externalize the myriad of emotions that are buried within using a melange of vibrant and contrasting colour juxtaposed with shapes and motifs.
