The Gratiaen Prize 2021

Ashok Ferrey won this year’s Gratiaen Prize for his new book The Unmarriageable Man (having been short-listed five times before), at a simple, stylish ceremony held in the garden of Barefoot Cafe. The judging panel consisted of career banker and informed reader Keshini Jayawardena, Peradeniya University academic Maduranga Kalugampitiya, and world-renowned author Shyam Selvadurai (who was unable to be present at the ceremony).Thanking Professor Neloufer de Mel and the Trust for the brilliant decision to host a live event, Ashok said the occasion was nevertheless tinged with a little sadness: because he could now no longer use the tag-line always the bridesmaid never the bride. ‘So this win is for all you bridesmaids out there,’ he continued. ‘Because it just goes to show, if this idiot can do it, any idiot can!’
