Paradise Road Galleries concluded ‘Sri Lankan Modern and Contemporary Art’ an exciting live auction recently. The very first Christie’s supported auction to take place in Sri Lanka, held at Paradise Road The Gallery Café featured sixteen lots of unique artworks from renowned artists such as Justin Pieris Deraniyagala, Richard Gabriel, Manjusri, Ivan Peiris, Ranil Deraniyagala, Jagath Weerasinghe and more.
Collectors and art enthusiasts from around the world gathered both in person and via phone bidding to compete for these works. The top lot of the collection was ‘Death Under the Bo Tree’ by Jagath Weerasinghe which sold for LKR 3.6 million surpassing its estimate of LKR 1.8 million. Another leading highlight was Justin Peiris Deraniyagala’s ‘Bathers’ which sold for LKR 2.6 million. All proceeds from the auction were donated towards the Sunera Foundation, a registered charity working to achieve social integration for persons living with disability in Sri Lanka. Sunera’s method is to enable self-expression.
