The Prince of Sinhala Pop

Revered as a pioneer of Sinhala pop music, Annesley Malewana is a legend in the sphere of contemporary music in Sri Lanka.

Hailed as the prince of Sinhala Pop, Annesley Malewana is one of Sri Lanka’s singing legends who is also considered a forefather of Sinhala pop music in which he has paved the way for genres such as contemporary baila. From being a lead vocalist in bands such as the Moonstones, Super Golden Chimes and Super Chimes to being a soloist, Annesley can be deemed as one of the pioneers in the Sri Lankan music industry who has produced many popular hit songs that continue to live in the hearts of many people.

Born in his rural hometown of Weralupe, Ratnapura, Annesley moved to the bustling capital city of Colombo to complete his higher education at St. Joseph’s College. During his time there he pursued his interest in sports such as cricket and tennis to no avail as he was unable to make a career out of it. His talent for singing was first discovered by his teacher, Mr. Loganathan who encouraged him to sing at a school event named ‘Interval Melodies’ where students performed on stage during their lunch break. “It was at this time of my life that I discovered a passion for singing. I watched a musical show where the Los Caballeros led by Neville Fernando performed and I thought to myself that one day, I too, will form a band and perform in front of people.”
