From sexy corsets to Chantilly lace bustiers, provocative silky bras/bralettes to sultry sheer
bodysuits – this year's flirtatious fashion trend is to wear lingerie outside of the bedroom for a night
on the town or, if you're feeling bold, during the day. It’s definitely en vogue though perhaps not for
the faint-hearted!
Getting hot out there
Having said that, feeling sensuous is really just a state of mind so it stands to reason that
experimenting with new ways to style your favourite lingerie with garments from your wardrobe will
be a lot of fun and raise your vibes. Believe me, fashionistas and celebrities have for decades been
mish-mashing lingerie to make bold fashion statements.
At a Miami Art Basel event last year, for example, Madonna at the age of 64 donned a black jacket
over a lace bustier and fishnet hosiery, while the outfit that British singer and songwriter Rita Ora
wore to the Oscars pre-party last month was essentially just sheer lingerie, consisting of a see-
through black bra top with matching black briefs accompanying a see-through maxi skirt with a
huge leg slit that revealed her sheer garter-style stockings.
Make your own rules
A-lister or not, it's quite easy to create alternative looks with your favourite undergarments without
feeling like you're exposing too much. Once you've established your own boundaries, and what you personally feel comfortable with, you can take a new look at your own undies collection and
put your own sexy spin on your outfits. Why not draw some naughty inspiration from the following slinky combinations? They are sure to make the look more wearable.
Bodysuits
You can pair a bodysuit with skinny jeans, trousers, skirts and shorts or even wear one under a
sheer mini dress. They are a terrific choice to wear for work with wide-legged or tapered trousers
producing a chic tidy appearance, or they can be dressed up for a ballerina-inspired look with a
mesh miniskirt, or dressed down tucked into high-waisted cutoffs and a pair of platforms.
Remember, square-neck bodysuits accentuate your neckline and are the perfect garment for
everyday wear and layering.
Lace longline bras and bralettes
A sexy lace, satin and velvet longline bra (something between a traditional underwire bra and a
classic bustier) or a bralette (a lightweight bra without an underwire) can look racy under a see-
through blouse or worn under a jacket or coat. For those who want to be a little less daring, both
types of frilly bras will look great with their lace edges peaking out from under a sweater.
Bustiers/corsets
In recent years, bustiers and corsets have become increasingly popular for everyday wear. They
are worn at fancy dress parties or on the red carpet with spectacular maxi, mini, or midi skirts, and
are now commonly worn with loose-fitting jogging suits and cargo pants, or with full suits, plaid
blazers, jeans and layered over button-down shirts. They can even be worn over a plain dress to
make a bold fashion statement.
Camisoles
You can mix and match and create lots of glam outfits for a girls’ night out or a special dinner party
just by wearing a foxy cami top. Simply pair up your favourite slinky skirt with a silky camisole top
for a hot date or for the nightclub, or opt for a risqué black cami dress (inspired by the nightie look),
and don’t forget to put on some sexy high heels.
Go on – dare to bare
Wearing underwear that’s a bit more risqué and audacious as regular, everyday clothing in public
doesn’t always have to be as scandalous as it sounds. It can leave little to the imagination, or it can
provide less of a shock factor if it just adds a touch of spice to an outfit. However, let's not forget
that lingerie which doesn't fit properly may be extremely uncomfortable – and worse, it will also
make your outfit look less than hot.
